LORAIN, Ohio (WCMH) — A Lorain man is facing several charges after he allegedly shot a dog several times while a child was asleep upstairs.

Police responded to a call in the northeast Ohio city around 1 a.m. Sunday after a woman called dispatch and was overheard saying, “Don’t kill me,” according to WKYC.

The caller told officers that a man fired a gun inside her home. Her dog Diablo was shot several times while in his cage.

Fox 8 reported that 31-year-old Ricardo Johnson got so angry at losing $5 in a card game, he went out to his car to get a gun and came back to demand the money back. He then lowered the gun and shot into the dog’s cage, police say. Johnson then allegedly fled the scene and led Lorain police on an 8-minute chase.

Diablo was found on the kitchen floor still alive, though he had to be euthanized.

Johnson was charged with aggravated menacing, owning a weapon under disability, child endangerment, discharging a weapon on prohibited premises and prohibitions concerning companion animals.
