DELAWARE, Ohio (WCMH) — Police in Delaware are looking for a man they say tried to abduct a nine-year-old girl while she was walking to a relative’s house.
According to a police report, the incident happened about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday on Troy Road.
Delaware Police Captain Adam Moore said the child was walking to a relative’s house when a man in a dark gray truck offered her a ride.
“She declined that ride, at which point she’s alleged that this subject attempted to grab her by the arm,” Moore said. “She was able to break free from his grasp, flee the area to a relative’s home where they promptly called police.”
Moore said officers spoke to the girl at her relative’s house and that she was “obviously very, very shaken up by the incident.”
Despite being upset, police said she gave a detailed description of the suspect. She told them he was a white man in his 30s or 40s, with an unshaven face and white paint on his shirt, driving a dark gray truck with damage to the rear.
“Short brown hair, she indicated that he had stubble in his beard,” Moore said. “[He was] wearing blue jeans and a blue T-shirt.”
NBC4 talked to the girl’s relative Thursday, but she didn’t want to speak on camera. She said she was concerned for the girl’s safety, since police are still looking for the man.
If he’s caught, police said he will likely face a felony charge of abduction.
Moore offered some tips to keep children safe:
- Don’t walk alone.
- Walk in well-lit or well-traveled areas, rather than cutting through alleys.
- Tell someone where you’re going.
- If something happens, children should tell a trusted adult.
