School bus driver issues warning after student nearly hit by car

PASCO COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – A Florida school bus driver took to social media Monday to warn other drivers to be cautious and vigilant when school buses are stopping.

Robyn Russ was dropping off a student Monday afternoon when a driver decided to go around the bus. In her 10 years driving for the district, Russ has never been so scared.

“I have people running my stop arms daily,” she said.

She said this was the first time anyone has ever gone around the right side of the bus – the side students exit from. Had she not been paying attention, Russ said the other driver would have hit her student.

“I came to a stop, opened the doors, pulled the brake, put the bus in neutral, glanced in my mirror and saw a little bit of blue and thought, ‘hmm,’” Russ said.

It happened on State Road 54 in Zephyrhills. Russ said her student had both feet off the bus.

“I screamed my student’s name and told him to get back on the bus,” she said. “I’ve never spoken to him that way, and he (leaped) back on.”

Russ said the other driver kept going into the Family Dollar parking lot. District officials say incidents like this one are reported daily.

“Well, it’s amazing that we’re still having to put this out there because everyone should know when the bus lights come flashing on and the stop arm goes out, that you stop,” Pasco County Schools spokeswoman Linda Cobbe said.

Russ hopes her message gets through. “I don’t know how people don’t realize that these are their neighbors’ children getting off the bus and they’re putting their lives at risk,” she said.

Russ was able to get the tag number and report it to authorities. She said law enforcement they can’t cite the driver because they didn’t see the incident.
