Local event recognizes black filmmakers, actors on Oscar night

COLUMBUS (WCMH)– Local artists gathered in Columbus Sunday for a gala to recognize the work of black filmmakers, actors and others in the film industry.

The inaugural Black Carpet celebration was held at the Studio Movie Grill.

Organizers said they were inspired to hold their own event after the Academy Awards neglected to nominate an African American for any category.

“We need more inclusion. We need more diversity in the film industry as a whole, and we wanted to take it upon ourselves to do our own Oscars,” said Yarima Karama with Why Our Urban Youth.

The event included a film showing clips from local artists.
