1 in custody following SWAT standoff

LANCASTER, OH (WCMH) — Lancaster City Schools are on a 2-hour delay Friday due to a SWAT standoff that ended Friday morning near an elementary school.

One person was taken into custody around 8:30 a.m. Friday. Police did not release any details about the arrest.

It all happened near Sanderson Elementary on Sells Road in Lancaster and does not involve the school itself. Around 7:30am, the district announced that Sanderson Elementary will be closed for the day.

According to Lancaster police, the incident started as a domestic issue at a home on Deerfield Court. Police have been on the scene since around 8:30pm Thursday.

Around 7:30am Friday, a man was seen poking his head through a hole in the apartment building’s roof and waving a white flag.

A woman who identified herself as the suspect’s mother pleaded with Christians everywhere to pray that this situation ends peacefully. She said, “Pray for him that he will give himself up before he gets hurt or the police get hurt.”

Several streets in the area are closed and apartments surrounding the suspect have been evacuated.

Police have not officially identified the suspect.
