COLUMBUS, Ohio – Reece Humphrey is a National U.S.A. wrestling champion who graduated from The Ohio State University, so he is training alongside some of the best wrestlers in the world at Ohio State for the Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. He is also a husband and father of two children, and he says his family stands his biggest support as he trains to accomplish his Olympic dream.
“Now I kind of expect him to win,” his wife, Meredith said with a chuckle. “I don’t get nervous when he wrestles now,” she added.
Humphrey said, “I see other wrestling wives watch closely at the international matches and it’s great to know my wife’s just like, hey, how’d you do? It’s fun, and it feels great to know she’s supporting me out there.”
He trains twice a day, and on Team U.S.A., he currently ranks No.1 at the 61 KG weight class.
His father, Jim Humphrey won a World Silver Medal in freestyle wrestling in 1977, and Humphrey says his family travels around the world to watch him compete at the highest level.
“He did such an awesome job helping me go through all that without forcing wrestling on me and making it my choice because wrestling’s really hard and it needs to be your own choice, otherwise you’ll get burned out,” said Humphrey.
With the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team trials just a few weeks away, his training is revving up.
His wife said, “I get sad you know to see him lose because I know it affects him so much, but I make sure he knows he’s still a winner in our eyes, whether he wins or loses, it’s fine with us.”
The U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team Trails will be held in Iowa April 9-10.
