NAPLES, FL (WBBH) — A Bolivian man is in jail on a $95,000 bond for felony charges of practicing dentistry without a license after a botched extraction allegedly sent a patient to the hospital.
Police say Juan Marco Flores Orgaz was operating out of a makeshift office inside his home in Naples, Florida.
According to arrest reports, Orgaz struggled to pull one victim’s teeth out and used a tool that made a sound like a drill. The report says Orgaz broke the woman’s tooth. It also states she was bleeding and the “dentist” was not wearing gloves.
The victim ended up in the hospital after the failed tooth pulling.
Dr. Stacey Vlachos, a licensed dentist and implant specialist in Naples, said people shouldn’t hesitate to check their dentist’s credentials because unlicensed people can do some serious harm.
“If they don’t have the qualifications they could kill you. You can get an embolism they could destroy your nerves,” Vlachos said. “You could literally die from someone pulling teeth.”
In court Wednesday, the state argued Orgaz was a flight risk, so as a condition of bail Orgaz would have to surrender his passport. Police are also trying to find if there are any other victims.
