Teen in critical condition after north Columbus shooting

COLUMBUS (WCMH)– Police are investigating after a shooting left a 16-year-old male hospitalized Friday.

According to Columbus Police, at about 10:14am officers were called to Milbank Road on the report of a shooting. A 16-year-old boy was taken to the hospital in critical condition, and was later downgraded to “critical but stable” condition, police said. He is expected to survive.

Homicide Detective Dave Sicilian says he believes the shooting may be a case of mistaken identity. He says the victim was outside the apartment building with one or more other juveniles when shots were fired from someone in a white Hyundai that had come down the street.

Not long after the shooting, patrol officers spotted what is believed to be the suspect vehicle at a gas station on Weber Rd. The driver was taken into custody for questioning.

Another boy said he felt a bullet pass through his pants leg, but he was not injured from the gunshot.

Neighbors say the area around the apartment complex is normally peaceful and family friendly.

The victim was originally to be taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, but because of the traffic caused by the crash on I-70 eastbound they diverted to Riverside Hospital.
