Animal shelter raising money for two-legged dog who needs a lift

(WLEX) A Kentucky community is rallying around a dog after an accident left her with two of her legs amputated.

Shay is a 2-year-old Chocolate Lab mix who was badly injured last month. Officials at the shelter believe she was most likely hit by a car.

“She had a compound fracture is one of her front legs. So we got her to the vet,” said Diana McGuire with the Menifee County Animal Shelter. “They could not save that leg and it had to be amputated.”

A few days after one leg was amputated, volunteers at the shelter noticed her other leg was beginning to swell. That leg was also broken and infection had started to set it. They tried to save the leg by putting it in a cast, but it came down to the decision to euthanize Shay or remove the leg. They removed the leg.

Now the Menifee County Animal Shelter is raising money to buy a special doggy wheelchair for Shay.

“It is custom made for the dog. It will have wheels in the back,” said McGuire.
