COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Columbus Africentric used a smothering press to beat Marion Pleasant 59-37 in the Division III state championship game Saturday morning at Value City Arena.
The Nubians (24-5) forced 36 turnovers while winning their fifth state title. After trailing 23-19 at the half, they opened the third quarter on a 10-0 run.
Kynnedy Azubike led a balanced scoring attack with 15 points while Leah Morrow had 12 points and Jordan Horston 11. Kamryn Kimmel led Marion Pleasant (27-3) with nine points while Leah Maniaci and Summer Blevins had seven apiece.
Africentric beat previously undefeated Ironton in the semifinals on Thursday.
The Nubians also won state titles in 2007, 2009, 2012 and 2014 and lost championship games in 2008 and 2013. The Spartans were playing in their first state championship game.
