12-year-old boy killed by falling boulder while hiking with family

KEENE, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Police say a 12-year-old hiker was killed by a falling boulder at the Roaring Brook Falls in the Town of Keene in New York.

Police say on March 13 they responded to a report of a hiker that had been killed by a falling boulder at the Roaring Brook Falls on State Route 73.

The investigation revealed that the victim, 12 year-old Connor McLaughlin from Greenwich had gone on an impromptu hike with a family member to look at the falls. While looking at the falls a boulder became loose naturally from the area adjacent to the top of the falls and fell approximately 100 feet, striking the boy and killing him.

Assisting at the scene were the New York State Forest Rangers, Department of Evironmental Conservation, Essex County Sheriff’s Office, and the Keene and Keene Valley Fire Departments.
