Trump speaks to voters at campaign rally near Youngstown

VIENNA TWP., Ohio (WKBN/WCMH) – Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s visit was marked by a large police presence, as well as approximately 2,500 people, who packed into the Winner Aviation hangar at the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport.

Trump was joined by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

Around 50 extra police officers were in Vienna Monday to prepare for Trump’s arrival. The airport was closed to all foot and vehicle traffic, and supporters were shuttled in from the Eastwood Field — where some protesters gathered with signs — to the airport.

Trump’s campaign postponed an event in Florida to host the rally in Vienna Township the night before Ohio’s primary.

Trump took his time in Ohio to tell voters about his lead in the polls and to discourage them from voting for Ohio Gov. John Kasich.

He criticized Kasich’s support of the North American Free Trade Agreement, which he said destroyed the state.

“Now he wants to sign TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership). That is going to be so much worse. I studied it carefully,” Trump said.

The crowd began cheering when Trump said he planned to build a $10 billion wall between the U.S. and Mexico, and he stressed that Mexico would pay for it.

“And who’s going to pay for the wall? Mexico. Mexico is going to pay for it, 100 percent,” he said.

He led the crowd in chanting “build that wall,” saying that the U.S. is plagued by terrorism, and it’s important to keep the borders secure.

Trump wrapped up his speech by urging the crowd to get out and vote.

“I love you Ohio. You can make the difference,” he said.

The Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport was still open for business during Trump’s rally, although some flights were delayed. Director of Aviation Dan Dickten said that delay was not due to Trump’s rally, but rather a mechanical issue on Allegiant Flight 606. That flight was scheduled to arrive around 11:40 p.m. — about six hours late.

Dickten said everything else, including scheduled arrivals and departures at the airport ran smoothly.
