KIAMA, Australia (WCMH) – An Australian surfer was attacked by a shark while surfing, and his friend is credited with saving his life.

According to 9NEWS, Brett Connellan, 22, was surfing on Bombo Beach in Kiama when he was attacked.

His friend Joel Trist was in the water nearby when it happened.

“The first thing I saw was Brett getting thrashed about in the water,” Trist told Seven News. He then heard a “terrible scream.”

Trist was able to swim to his friend and pull him to shore.

The shark reportedly took a significant chunk of his left thigh and injured his hand.

With the help of two nurses, they were able to stop the bleeding in his leg.

“I grabbed his leg rope and tied it as hard as I could around the top of his thigh,” said Trist.

At last check, Connellan was in serious but stable condition.
