SOUTH BEACH, FL (WFLA) – A tourist visiting South Florida became the victim of a brutal attack that left him beaten, bloody and swollen. The victim is calling what happened to him a “hate crime,” and says he was targeted because he is gay.
The California couple was visiting the Miami area on vacation when the trip turned terrifying. The two went to grab a bite to eat at a local fast food restaurant.
“I got slammed to the ground. It was kind of a blur. I was getting kicked. I was getting hit,” Schaeffer recounts.
Schaeffer and his boyfriend were standing in line to order their food when the two kissed, WSVN reported. Moments later, he was under attack.
“I have sustained welts to my forehead, my skull, my nose and my jaw. I have cuts on my right arm. I have cuts on my left hand,” he said.
Surveillance video captured the violent attack. At one point, the attack wrapped his legs around the victims head in what, police say, appears to be a professional fighting move.
The boyfriend attempted to stop the attack but was pushed away by another man police believe was with the attacker.
The victim suffered a shattered lip, nose and sense of security.
“I’ve never been victimized for my sexuality. It’s kind of something that is now… to be honest, kind of scared. I mean, it just doesn’t make me comfortable.”
Investigators are still looking for the attacker.
