Police warn of alcohol abuse surrounding prom season

COLUMBUS (WCMH) – It’s prom season, and that often means the temptation for teens to party with alcohol.

The Ohio Investigative Unit is urging teens to follow the law, and for parents and establishments to be a part of the solution, not the problem this year.

At times, some parents choose to host prom parties at home. On occasion, those parties include alcohol, because parents think it is a safe environment with supervision. That is illegal, and can lead to other problems.

Investigators say sexual assaults, fights, even fights with weapons can happen when drinking and young people are involved.

For those that serve alcohol, there is a huge responsibility.

OIU regularly conducts checks of establishments to make sure they are checking ID’s and not serving to minors.

OIU has in-school classes as well as education for establishments available to anyone who asks.
