NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – A man who is accused of kicking a Metro police officer during a scuffle in a public housing community surrendered himself to police Friday afternoon.
Michael Mays, 26, is charged with aggravated assault against a police officer.
Police said Mays is not a resident at James Cayce Homes where the incident occurred Tuesday night.
Officer Matthew Cammarn, who responded to the area of South Seventh Street after reports of a fight.
Cammarn was attempting to arrest 22-year-old Brian Shannon for assault when Shannon resisted, bringing both men to the ground in a scuffle.
As the scuffle continued, several members of a crowd began pulling, pushing, kicking and hitting Officer Cammarn.
Police said multiple citizens called in tips that helped identify Mays as the man who kicked Cammarn, who was Metro’s 2015 Officer of the Year.
Mays has multiple previous arrests on charges including felony drug and weapon possession, aggravated burglary, and domestic assault.
