Parents concerned some Columbus City Schools buildings may close as city looks to modernize

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) –Columbus City Schools held the first of four community dialogues to get input on how the district maintains, renovates or replaces school buildings.

The first meeting took place at Columbus Global Academy at Brookhaven located at 4077 Karl Road.

“We are hoping they’re willing to give us some insight of what they are willing to support and those things that would cause a community to have reservations,” said W. Shawna Gibbs, who serves on the school board.

Parents Amanda McClafferty and Kristen Allison attended Monday’s meeting. Both have children at Ecole Kenwood Elementary, a French emersion program offered by Columbus City Schools.

It is located at 6655 Sharon Woods Boulevard, just north of Riverside Methodist Hospital.

“What we are looking for with this plan is a viable pathway for our kids to continue their French language education,” said McClafferty.

ccs 2Once school board members vote and approve a plan, it will take 10 – 15 years to complete. It will be done in phases, taking into account changes in demographics and shifts in programming.

No changes are proposed for the upcoming 2016-2017 school year.

Parents are worried district leaders could close and consolidate buildings, such as several of the high schools with dwindling enrollment.

“It would be very nice if they had a good viable option to continue with their classmates if that’s appropriate for them,” said Allison.

The next community meeting is Tuesday evening at Marion-Franklin High School, located at 1265 Koebel Road.
