Three dead in Athens County after crash on U.S. 33

ATHENS, Ohio (WCMH) – The Athens Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a three-vehicle, triple fatality crash that happened Friday night on U.S. 33.

According to the patrol, a 2005 Chrysler 300 and a 2003 Ford Taurus collided head-on around 9:08 p.m. near mile marker 23.

The driver of the 2003 Ford, 22-year-old Kiara L. McDaniel of Virginia, was pronounced dead on the scene by the Athens County Coroner.

The driver of the 2005 Chrysler, 38-year-old Curtis A. Runyon of Lancaster, was flown by Med-Flight to Grant Hospital, where he later died of his injuries. His passenger, 39-year-old Jessica C. Salisbury of Laurelville, was transported to O’Bleness Hospital in Athens and and later died.

The patrol says there was a secondary crash with a commercial vehicle, as well.

The driver of the 2002 International Harvester truck was John B. Layne, age 43 of Lancaster. He was not injured during the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
