Topeka gunman injures officers, large fire breaks out in motel

TOPEKA, Kansas (KSNT/WCMH) — Fire crews in Topeka battled a large hotel fire that broke out during an active shooting situation with a suspect Saturday night.

The shooting happened at the County Club Motel at 37th and SW Topeka Boulevard.

The U.S. Marshal Service was attempting to locate a person at the motel, and that is when a gunman began firing at officers.

A large fire broke out in the hotel after the shooting began, but authorities have not determined how the fire started.

Lieutenant Colleen Stuart of the Topeka Police Department said multiple officers sustained non-life threatening injuries. The officers were taken to a local hospital, and are expected to recover.

The identity and condition of the suspect has not been released.
