Man who threw daughter off Florida bridge declared incompetent to stand trial

John Jonchuck

CLEARWATER, FL (WFLA) — The man who allegedly threw his daughter off a St. Petersburg bridge, killing her, has been declared incompetent to stand trial in court Tuesday morning.

John Jonchuck is accused of throwing his 5-year-old daughter Phoebe over the side of the Misener Bridge in January 2015.

He was ruled by doctors to be incompetent to stand trial in February for the third time and has been in a state mental hospital. He recently was moved to the county jail for today’s hearing after the issuance of a new psychological report, which is sealed.

Tuesday was the fourth try to send the case to trial. His case will return to court October 18th.

If Jonchuck is deemed competent then and later found guilty, prosecutors said they plan to seek the death penalty.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
