Middle school student’s hair set on fire

ORLANDO, FL (WESH) — A Florida middle school student’s mother is demanding action after her daughter’s hair was set on fire at school.

Makiah Howard’s hair was set on fire Thursday, allegedly by another student. She had braids on Thursday and her natural hair was mixed with synthetic hair as she made her way to fourth period at Carver Middle School in Orlando.

“All of a sudden, I just saw everyone laughing. I didn’t even know what was going on. He started banging my head with a folder, I could feel the smoke and stuff,” Makiah said.

That same student allegedly tried to put the fire out, but it was an administrator who finally extinguished it.

“It felt like burnt stuff, it was just burnt stuff coming out of my hair,” Makiah said. “He did it for no reason. I have no problem with him, I don’t talk to him or anything.”

Makiah’s mother said administrators told her the male student would not return to school and three other boys were suspended for five days.
