Suspected killer of woman in homeless camp indicted on murder charges

COLUMBUS (WCMH) —  Danny Lee Johnson is accused of killing his girlfriend at a homeless camp in south Columbus along the Scioto River.

Johnson, 34, was indicted Friday by a Franklin County Grand Jury for two counts of murder, one count of tampering with evidence, and one count of domestic violence.

campPolice say Johnson killed his girlfriend, 46-year-old Cathleen Howatt, April 19, in her tent at a homeless camp located along the Scioto River near West Mound and Short streets.

According to a coroner’s report, Howatt was strangled to death.

Johnson was arrested later in the day in Reynoldsburg.

Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O’Brien says that if Johnson is convicted he faces 18-years to life in prison.

Johnson is scheduled to be arraigned May 2.
