Man arrested for attempted arson on city’s southeast side

Lester Broadie., Jr.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH)–Columbus Police arrested a man who allegedly tried to set a southeast Columbus home on fire Wednesday morning.

Firefighters responded to the home on Wesson Drive, where police had responded to a domestic situation. The fire department said one of the people involved, 43-year-old Lester Broadie Jr., poured gasoline in several areas inside the home. Broadie left the home before police arrived and did not ignite the gasoline but the fumes were still a safety issue. Firefighters responded at 1:00 a.m. to ventilate the home and mitigate the hazard while fire investigators gathered information.

Later this morning, officials say, a warrant was issued and fire investigators returned to the home on Wesson Drive to arrest Broadie. The Columbus Division of Police SWAT team was sent to assist but Broadie surrendered to investigators peacefully.
