Teen dies in tragic hammock accident

DES MOINES, IA (WHO) An Iowa Catholic school is falling on their faith after one of their classmates was tragically killed over the weekend.

Peri Sagun, 13, was on a hammock at her Des Moines home on Saturday. A brick pillar she and her sister attached a hammock to collapsed when she jumped into the hammock. The pillar fell on top of the young girl.

She was rushed to Mercy hospital, where she later died of her injuries.

Sagun was a student at nearby St. Augustin’s Catholic School where students and teachers are mourning the loss of their classmate and pupil.

“Every child had the same question. Why did this happen, how could God do this? Why now? We could give them no answers other than this is a plan, and we don’t know the plan, but we just have to pray that the family gets through it” said teacher Pat Hogan.

Sagun, a winner of the presidential scholarship, was supposed to graduate eigth grade next week. Now the staff is thinking of a way to honor Sagun during the graduation, but they say they wish there was more they could do.

“You would gladly take their place, in a heartbeat. They`re wonderful kids, and so when something happens like this you just wish that you could just exchange places” said Hogan.
