Hand-made prom dresses bring teen recognition

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — A Columbus teen is taking the fashion world by storm after hand-making his date’s dress for prom.

Jimelle Levon is still in high school, but has taken his bedroom and turned it into what he calls his “Sewing Lab.”

Levon taught himself to sew at 14 years old, and now has big dreams of becoming a full-time fashion designer.

Levon has faced some big challenges in life and often watched kids have things his family couldn’t afford.

“Me and my mother lived in a shelter before when I was in 5th grade,”  Levon said.  “From there on, once I hit 6th grade, I was always a hard worker, either shoveling the snow or anything to gain money because I didn’t want to be in the predicament anymore.”

However, the social media star has earned big recognition for his designs.

Levon started with one dress and now makes three to four custom dresses every week during prom season. He sells his gowns from $300-$450.

He’s even been able to quit the two jobs he was working after school.

After graduation in June, Levon is heading to Clark Atlanta University in the fall where he plans to study business and fashion.
