SPRINGDALE, Ohio (AP) – Police near Cincinnati say a suspect shot a police dog during a chase before officers fired back, hitting the man.

Police in Springdale say both are expected to recover.

The chase happened early Friday morning. Police say officers tried to stop a suspected drunken driver, but the man jumped out the car with a gun and ran away.

Springfield Township Police Chief Robert Browder says a police dog named Pako bit the suspect and that’s when the man shot the dog in the shoulder.

He says officers then fired back, hitting the man in the back.

The police department said Friday afternoon that Pako is out of surgery.
