ORLANDO, FL (WCMH) — There are now 49 handmade white crosses placed along the edge of Orlando’s Beauty Lake.
Each cross has a victim’s name and photo from the deadly Pulse nightclub shooting.
According to CNN, Greg Zanis of Illinois built and placed the crosses himself.
“You know, you gotta love your neighbor and love your brother and quit all that judging,” said Zanis.
Love for victims he never met, but still fueled his 1,200 mile drive from Illinois to Orlando to place the crosses.
“We just need to honor them. We look like we’re a religious country and we’re not. We have so much trouble,” Zanis told CNN.
Zanis says the crosses are symbols of how he coped after his father in law was shot and killed 20 years ago. “I just put the red hearts on there to show love.”
The crosses line Beauty Lake, just outside Orlando Regional Medical Center, where many of the injured were taken after the shooting. Now it has become a place of reflection and healing for many.
“Something that we’re going to have to live with and somehow cope and come together as humans,” said shooting survivor Jennette McCoy.
