HAVANA, IL (WCMH) – A swarm of mayflies has decided to call an Illinois bridge home, and they are causing quite a traffic mess.

The Havana, Illinois police department said there was an invasion of mayflies on a bridge over the Illinois River.

Police said at one point, the mayflies were piled six inches high and when ran over, became very slick. Police attributed motorcycle crashes and cars stuck in the center of the bridge to the presence of the mayflies.

A picture provided by police shows an insect covered bridge that could easily be mistaken for mud.
