Girl says she was fired from pizza store for asking for equal pay

KANSAS CITY, MO (WCMH) — The girl says when she asked to receive the same pay as her male friend, she was fired from her job at the pizza restaurant.

According to WDAF, Jensen Walcott, 17, was hired for the same position on the same day as one of her good friends, Jake Reed, also 17 at Pizza Studios.

After talking about their new jobs, Jensen says she found out Reed was making $8.25 an hour; a quarter more an hour than what she was making.

Jensen says she thought it was just a mix up, so she called her new manager to ask about the wage difference.

“I was like maybe when I’m on hold right now, she will just offer me 8.25 and everything is gonna be good but… she didn’t do that,” Jensen told WDAF.

The manager got back on the phone and told Jensen she was fired for discussing wages, which is against the company’s policy. Reed would also be fired.

Both teens say they were never told not to discuss wages.

Pizza Studios issued a statement apologizing to both teens and saying “We absolutely do not tolerate any kind of discrimination, including gender discrimination.”

The company also says the will be offered their jobs back and the manager who fired the teens has been let go.
