Chopper crew member tackles burglary suspect during chase

HOUSTON (WCMH) – A police helicopter crew member made an unexpected take-down as police chased a burglary suspect.

One of the suspects from a home burglary in Houston jumped from the car while fleeing from police.

As officers chased the man through a field, it became apparent that he wasn’t going to give himself up. He kept going even after he was hit by a police cruiser, KPRC reported.

The chopper crew even tried to slow the suspect down with the helicopter’s rotor wash, flying just a few feet above him. As the chase continued, pilot Jeff Serpas set the chopper down on the ground while Sgt. Steven Borgstedte jumped out to make the tackle.

“I worked patrol, I used to work the streets for a very long time before I was promoted, my goal is, we have a suspect, bad guy, we do what it takes to take him to custody,” Borgstedte said.

At one point, video shows the suspect trying to take Borgstedte’s gun. Borgstedte was able to throw it aside and hold onto the suspect until other officers arrived.
