WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) – A Warren, Ohio pastor who was robbed at gunpoint Sunday night says he forgives the man who did it.

Pastor Austin Shaw III from the Community Church of God in Christ says he was not afraid of what was going on. He knew that he was looking into the eyes of someone in need of direction.

“That’s all I could see. He just needed direction and he was going in the wrong direction this time.”

Shaw was home from all-day Sunday church services when he heard a knock at his front door.

“I just opened the door and there was somebody there to rob me. Well, I had no idea that was going to take place. I’ve been here for about 18, 19 years and that had never happened before.”

He says the man in his early 20s demanded $50.

“I said, ‘Well here, here’s $60,’ and…they took the $60, they backed up and said, ‘You’ll never see me again, Father.’”

Even though it could have been a dangerous situation, Shaw says he forgives the man who robbed him.

“You have to forgive, no matter what the person does. That’s what I teach and I’ve always taught that. I’ve been taught that myself and I find that’s the best way, to forgive everyone.”

The pastor says if the young man just asked for money and given him a good reason why he needed it, Shaw would have given it to him. He said the man didn’t need to bring a gun.

Shaw hopes he does see the man again and gets a chance to speak with him, but under different circumstances.
