NASCAR great Dale Earnhardt Jr. speaks to a crowd at Nationwide Children's Hospital Thursday

COLUMBUS, Ohio — He’s NASCAR’s most popular driver and one of the most recognizable names in American sports.

Saturday night at Kentucky Speedway, Dale Earnhardt Jr. will take a rare backseat to some deserving kids.

Earnhardt visited Nationwide Children’s Hospital Thursday morning to meet some of the patients and their families. He also unveiled the design for his race car during Saturday’s Sprint Cup race which features the NCH logo on the hood along with the names of patients at the hospital. Four NCH patient champions were chosen to spend Saturday with Earnhardt and his crew during the race in Kentucky.

Earnhardt gave a special pair of autographed, race-worn gloves to the kids who will visit him during the race weekend. He also donated to the hospital a specially designed bell on top of an miniature NCH race car.
