Ohio 3-year-old ‘fighting for his life’ after being found in hot car

MORAINE, Ohio (WDTN) – A three-year-old boy has been taken to Dayton Children’s Hospital with life-threatening injuries after being found in a hot car.

Moraine Police received a call around 7 p.m. on Wednesday in the 2800 block of Holman Avenue on a missing child.

When police arrived, a large group of family members, friends and neighbors were looking for the child.

After a brief search, the child was found unresponsive in a vehicle with the windows up. Police say the car was very hot.

“It’s my understanding the child was not in a seat when he was discovered,” Moraine Police Sgt. Jon Spencer said. “However, it’s unclear at this point how the child got in the vehicle.”

“That’s still a matter under investigation right now.”

Police say it doesn’t appear the child was driven to the scene and then left in the car. They continue to investigate all possibilities.

“It’s still unclear how long the child was missing prior to us being notified,” Sgt. Spencer said. “I know there are a lot of family and friends that live in this platt.”

“I know the search was a large group of people trying to search for the child.”

Officers on scene administered aid until medics arrived. The child was taken to Kettering Hospital for evaluation, then transferred to Children’s Hospital for treatment.

Moraine Police are still investigating the incident. No one has been taken into custody at this time.

“It’s not a blame thing at this point,” Sgt. Spencer said. “It’s more of a, it’s a tragedy that’s happened.”

“Obviously, a three-year-old is fighting for his life at this point and any time that happens, that’s not a situation where we want to come in immediately and place blame.”

Police encourage everyone to keep a close eye on their children, especially younger kids, to try and prevent things like this from happening.

“Tragedy can happen very quickly, as we’re reminded today,” Sgt. Spencer said. “The biggest thing I can tell you is to be fully aware of where your child or children are.

“Make sure you know what they’re doing. You’ve just got to make sure. Especially, with a three-year-old child, it can happen very quickly, so you’ve just got to make sure that you’re fully aware and you’re responding to what they need.”
