Ohio teen dies on mission trip to help children at orphanage

SIDNEY, OH (WDTN) – Ty Martin, 17, died during a mission trip to Tijuana Mexico on Sunday.

Martin was one of eight students and four adults visiting an orphanage on a mission trip with Sidney First United Methodist Church when he took a fatal fall. This was his third mission trip with the church.  Those who knew him are stunned.

“When something like this happens there’s a shock value that goes across the family of God, and so the family has some needs that they need to share. We’ll certainly address it Sunday. Give people a chance to pray,” Senior Pastor Rev. Dr. David Chivington said.

The Sidney High School student would help the kids at the Alpha Community Center where would volunteer with Mark Rinderle.

“I just I could hardly believe it when I first heard it. I said there’s got to be a [mistake], if I wouldn’t have heard it from who I did, I probably would have said no it’s just a joke,” Rinderle said.  “Last picture I seen was him holding a child down there in Mexico, at least he was doing something that he loved to do.”
