DALLAS (KXAN) — It’s hard to see the squad cars under a growing memorial at the Dallas Police Department. Sunday hundreds stopped by to pray, hug and say hello to an officer.
It was a day of reflection and understanding for Shey Akers and her 5-year-old son.
“I wanted him to be a part of it,” said Akers “I wanted to show him support for all people.”
Akers’ son dreams of being a police officer and she couldn’t be more proud.
“I like them to know that I want to be a real police officer,” said Achsen Akers as he looked around the memorial with such wonder “I want to help people.”
Akers wanted officers to know how much her son looks up to them. Dallas Police Willie Pippen’s says its those things he needs to see and hear right now as the department mourns.
“This is the joy – support is the joy that I find in the situation in the loss that we have now,” explained officer Pippen “I just smile and makes me happy just seeing our community out here supporting us this is a lot of love.”
Sunday officers across Dallas prepared for another night of protests. The department isn’t saying if anything has changed when responding to those protests, but sources tell KXAN that as a safety precaution two officers will be riding patrol together for now. More changes could come in the next few weeks, but right now the focus is on healing.
Dr. Stephen Manyama drove from Alabama with his friend to simply pray. They walked a cross they made to the memorial and say it was what needed to be done.
“The cross says peace by the blood of Christ,” read Dr. Manyama “We borrowed the hammer and skrews and we built it.”
A vigil is planned at Dallas City Hall Plaza Monday night at 8 p.m. Tuesday President Obama along with Vice President Biden and former President George W. Bush will be in Dallas joining city leaders at an interfaith memorial service. President Obama is also expected to meet privately with the families of the fallen police officers.
NBC has a new breakdown of the numbers, showing a total of four Dallas officers killed, four Dallas officers injured, one DART officer killed, three DART officers injured and two El Centro officers injured.
