Cop becomes viral hit after dancing with BLM activists at cookout

WICHITA, KS (KSN) – A video showing a Wichita police officer dancing with a group of Black Lives Matter activists at a community cookout has become a viral hit.

KSN spoke with the dancing cop about his over-night stardom.

“Someone approached me last night and told me I’m ‘Officer Brown with the get down’ is their name for me,” said Wichita Police Officer Aaron Moses.

Officer Aaron Moses was at Sunday night’s First Steps Community Cookout at McAdams Park in Wichita. A woman at the event, filmed him and a group of activists dancing to the “Cha-Cha Slide” then posted it to social media.

The 30-second video had more than 3 million views on Facebook and was trending on Twitter on Monday.

“I hit the “Whip and the Nae Nae”, I got some lessons on that,” Moses said.

Moses, 25, said he also learned a few life lessons while at the cookout. Moses, who was born and raised in Wichita, said he always dreamt of becoming a cop. He said he didn’t realize other people didn’t feel the same way.

“I will never grow up and not know what it’s like to trust a police officer and I think once you realize that, its a pretty profound thing that affects the way you do everything,” he said.

Moses said it especially effects how he does his job.

“I will never know what it’s like to grow up in a minority community, but I can try my hardest to serve them the best I can,” Moses said.

Even if that means he has to show his silly side every once in awhile.

“If I need to dance a little goofy and do the “Cha Cha Slide” to help people see that I’m a real person that I do care and that I trust you, then that’s what I’m going to do,” Moses said. “Until we build an atmosphere of trust, care and compassion with the people we serve and those people accept that and trust in us, nothing is going to get better.”

The video of Moses dancing had nearly 60,000 shares on Facebook as of Monday evening.
