Traffic stop becomes surprise marriage proposal

JACKSON, MS (WJTV) – It was a traffic stop with a very happy ending, when one man proposed to his high school sweetheart.

Wednesday a young couple was pulled over by an officer, but it was all apart of a special plan.

Wedding bells will soon ring for a Hinds County couple this after a very special proposal.

I caught up with the young man who used law enforcement to assist him in asking the love of his life for her hand in marriage.

Sirens and lights may not seem like a romantic way to pop the question, but for 22-year-old Quintez Green it was all a part of the plan.

“She already kind of seen the ring, so I didn’t want to think of a restaurant or any type of special setting, cause she would know,” Green said.

Green decided to ask a police officer for help proposing to his girlfriend of six years, Brittney Thompson, a baptist hospital nursing student.

“Basically being that a lot of police crimes and all that’s been going on, I figured if I did it that way she wouldn’t think about the wedding, she’d think about something else,” he said.

Green and an officer came up with a plan to fake a traffic stop on Thompson’s lunch break.

“I passed by him and as soon as I passed by him, he threw the lights and sirens as if I was being pulled over for a traffic stop,” Green explained.

The officer, who does not want to be identified told Green he was going to have to take him in because of an improper license and that’s when his fiancee to be began to worry.
“I was scared because I thought he was going to go to jail, and I was trying to think about how am I going to explain this to his momma,” Thompson said.

“He asked me to get out of the vehicle, so I step out of the vehicle and I get ready to walk back to the car, so as i get to the back of the car he’s putting me in handcuffs. My hands are behind my back, but at the same time I’m pulling the ring out,” Thompson explained.

Green says it was at this time his plan took an unexpected turn.

“He asked her about her license it just so happen that it was her birthday and her license expired on that date,” Thompson said.

The officer then asked Thompson to step out of the car, and that is when she saw Green on one knee.

“I felt mad at first, but then you know I gathered myself together, then i was like yes,” Thompson said.

The couple says the officer is responsible for helping to change their lives forever.

“It’s so many negative things being put out about cops right now, and for him to come and do that was nice,” Thompson said.

There is no wedding date set at this time, but the couple says they could be saying ‘I Do’ this fall. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
