Coming out of Saturday’s silver medal swim in the 400m freestyle, Sun Yang of China advanced from the semifinal with the fastest time in the 200m freestyle on Sunday. Sun clocked 1:44.63, ahead of Japan’s Kosuke Hagino and Team USA’s Conor Dwyer.

Joining Dwyer in the final is fellow American Townley Haas, who raced to 1:45.92, good enough for sixth place.

World record holder Paul Biedermann of Germany advanced to the final in fourth place, while 2015 world champion James Guy of Great Britain made it into the final in eighth place. South Africa’s Chad le Clos, who memorably won the 200m butterfly at the 2012 Olympics over Michael Phelps, advanced to the 200m freestyle final with his time of 1:45.94.

Neither 2012 Olympic champion Yannick Agnel of France nor co-silver medalist Park Tae Hwan of South Korea advanced from the preliminary heats into the semifinals. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
