Lilly King leads the 100m breaststroke field after Sunday’s semifinals, where she raced to one minute, 5.70 seconds. Yulia Efimova of Russia currently sits in second, 0.02 seconds behind King.

Fellow American Katie Meili also advanced to the final, in fifth place, with her time of 1:06.52.

King and Meili qualified first and third, respectively, coming out of Sunday morning’s preliminary heats. Sandwiched between them was Efimova, who reportedly heard boos from the stands during her preliminary heat; the 2015 World champ had been previously battling both the International Olympic Committee and the international governing body of swimming for the right to compete in Rio after the Russian doping scandal and her prior positive tests put her eligibility in jeopardy.

2012 Olympic champion Ruta Meilutyte, who lives in the United Kingdom but represents Lithuania, advanced in fourth place with her time of 1:06.44. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
