Columbus Metropolitan Libraries offering ‘Books for Breakfast’

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — As many kids prepare to hit the books once again in the couple of weeks Columbus City Schools and Columbus Metropolitan Library are teaming up to make sure kids focus on reading first thing every day.

They started a program called “Books for Breakfast” geared at children in kindergarten through fifth grade. Donated new and gently used books are being collected at all 23 Columbus library locations for kids to read when they eat breakfast at their school each morning.

Donation boxes were placed in the various library branches on August 1.

Ben Zenitsky, spokesperson for the Columbus Metropolitan Library, says the partnership is all about improving kids’ ability to read well and to progress.

“This partnership is all in response to the Third Grade Reading Guarrantee. We saw a few years ago some alarming statistics especially out of some of the Columbus City Schools and more at risk neighborhoods. Third-grade reading scores were very low. What we’ve seen is a really significant turn around in the last few years thanks to awareness and partnerships like these getting books in the hands of kids,” said Zenitsky.

The book drive ends at library locations on August 30.

On August 31st those who are interested can drop off books from 7am until noon at the German Village Panera Bread and donors can receive some Panera coupons.

According to Scott Varner with Columbus City Schools three years ago 42 percent of Columbus third-graders had met the State’s Third Grade Reading Guarantee. That percentage is now at 92 percent. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
