Nico Hernandez defeats top ranked Russian, moves on

Hernandez wins in huge upset

Nico Miguel Hernandez,Vasilii Egorov

In a huge upset, American Nico Hernandez defeated Russian boxer Vasilii Egorov by unanimous decision. Egorov was seeded second by the AIBA, behind light flyweight Joahnys Argilagos (Cuba). Egorov was predicted by many as a favorite to win gold in the light flyweight division.

In contrast, Hernandez had a comparatively low seeding. He moves on to the quarterfinals on Wednesday. A victory in the quarterfinals would guarentee both Hernandez and USA Boxing a medal in Rio.

A few hours before the fight, Hernandez acknowledged he wasn’t a favorite to win, but would “make the upset happen.” provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
