Girls at Gabby Douglas’s gym cheer her to gold, dream of their own Olympic moment

WESTERVILLE, OH (WCMH)–On Tuesday night, United States Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas won her third gold medal.

Dozens of girls who want to be just like her cheered her on from the Westerville gym where she trains.

Gabby trains at Buckeye Gymnastics in Westerville. There are two teenagers at the same gym on track to compete for a spot in the 2020 games.

“I love her personality and I love how confident she is all the time. I really look up to her,” said 14-year-old Olympic hopeful Shania Adams.

Olympic watch party 2Not everyone will ever meet an Olympian, let alone work out with one. But Adams and 14-year-old Shilese Jones get to flip, twist and jump right alongside their Olympic idol.

“It does help that she’s here because it does show them this is where I can be in a couple years,” said Buckeye Gymnastics Teach Coach Fernando Villa.

Villa helped train Douglas.

“She’s very talented, very quick, works hard,” he said.

He said Adams and Jones are on the path to qualify for the next summer Olympic Games in Tokyo.

“They’re basically the next step up from being where Gabby’s at right now,” he said.

Jones said Gabby is her inspiration, giving her the advice, “keep going strong, never give up.”

Coach Villa said these three athletes spend 6-8 hours in the gym nearly every day. Adams and Jones are home schooled so they can give all their focus to training.
