Mom speaks out and forgives daughter’s killer

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — A central Ohio mother says her daughter’s shooting death was accidental.

Columbus Police say 17-year-old Daylee Newman was shot and killed by her boyfriend Thomas Gutierrez.  Newman’s mother spoke exclusively to NBC4, sharing a message of forgiveness.  She says Gutierrez accidentally shot her daughter while improperly handling a gun inside a south side Columbus home on August 2.

Daylee’s Newman’s mother, Darian, says “I talked to Thomas and I asked him. I believe he would have told me the truth. Seeing him and hearing his voice solidified it for me, I guess.”

In the face of tragedy, this mom has found space in her heart to forgive. Newman explains, “ I need to make sure that he doesn’t suffer any more than he has to through this. We are all going to obviously suffer, but I have to make sure that people really know what happened.”

Newman says she has listened to the frantic 911 calls over and over. Gutierrez spoke to dispatchers seconds after allegedly shooting Daylee Newman. Darian Newman adds, “My heart broke for him. I can’t imagine how afraid he was.”

Those motherly words of compassion are words she says her daughter would have wanted to hear. Newman says, “She was a loving person and she wouldn’t want anything negative to come out of this. Or, for there to be any hatred or anything like that.”

Darian Newman says her family has been surrounded by live since her daughter was shot and killed.  She hopes that support can be shared with Thomas Gutierrez and his loves ones as well. She adds, “Please support his family, too. They loved her [Daylee] just as much as we did.”

Thomas Gutierrez remains at the Franklin County Jail on one million dollars bond. Newman says Gutierrez should not be charged with murder and his bond should be much lower.  Gutierrez makes his next court appearance later this week.
