Columbus Police looking for emergency call takers

COLUMBUS (WCMH)–In the market for a new job? The Columbus Division of Police is hiring people to work as 911 emergency call takers.

A spokesperson says the Division of Police is looking for a couple dozen people to hire by the end of the year. Training will be provided, and a high school diploma or GED is required.

The full-time position pays between $19.32 and $25.94 an hour. Applications are accepted through Wednesday.

The position requires someone who is able to work under pressure and act calmly in emergency or crisis situations.

“You definitely need to be able to remain calm in pressuring situations,” said Tracie Sterner, who works in the call center. “Any kind of call you get in, you could go from having a simple easy call to having a shooting or something like that.”
