Boy, 10, dies after being shot at shooting range

GARNER, IA (AP/WCMH) — A young boy has died after an apparently accidental shooting at a firing range in Garner, Iowa.

Police say in a news release that Cade Hartwig, 10, of Clear Lake, suffered a head wound Sunday afternoon from a pellet gun at the Garner shooting range.

Garner City Administrator Randy Lansing said Wednesday that the boy and a younger brother went to the range with their grandfather, Tom Hartwig Sr., who also lives in Garner. Lansing says exactly what occurred at the range Sunday remains unclear, but no charges are expected to be filed.

Police have characterized the incident as an accidental shooting death.

A funeral for the 10-year-old boy will be held on Saturday at 10am, KIMT-TV reports. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
