Uber raises minimum fare in Columbus by 22%

Associated Press)

COLUMBUS (WCMH) – Uber announced Friday that the minimum fare for rides in Columbus is being raised, effective today.

The minimum fare charged for a ride is going up by a dollar, from $4.45 to $5.45, including the $1.45 booking fee.

Only passengers going very short distances will notice the increase. Once a ride goes more than a couple miles and the fare exceeds the minimum, the price is unchanged.

The change was prompted by Drivers’ complaints of short rides not being profitable. A minimum fare trip of $4.45 nets the driver $2.25 once the booking fee and 25% Uber commission are taken out.

A $5.45 minimum fare ride will net a driver $3.00.

In a message to drivers Friday afternoon, Uber said:

This change was fueled by drivers like you. We understand that all the short rides add up, so the new uberX minimum fare starts today. This new minimum fare includes the same $1.45 booking fee.
