Law enforcement in New Mexico learn to de-stress with yoga

RIO RANCHO, NM (KRQE) With the recent acts of violence towards police officers happening in the nation, one woman is using a common exercise to help law enforcement de-stress.

Caryn Husk is now a yoga instructor, but she worked as a parole officer and said the stress coming from the job can sometimes be deadly.

“You struggle because there’s a lot of darkness I would say that you deal with on a daily basis, so the yoga I always used to kind of even that scale,” she said.

The darkness she’s referring to are the recent acts of violence against police officers. Throughout his 2 year career, Officer Aaron Brown of the Rio Rancho Police Department said he’s no stranger to feeling low.

“It all brings back memories, every single time something happens,” he said.

Recently, Officer Brown has taken up yoga to help him not only perform better on the job, but become a healthier person.

“Physically and mentally I felt refreshed, revived. I was able to sleep better at night right away,” he said.

The mental health aspect of the practice is important to both Officer Brown and Husk because it can be just as deadly as the violence.

“It’s not just violence and bullets that kill officers; it’s heart disease, heart attacks, hyper tension, things along those lines,” said Husk.

Officer Brown is currently doing the best he can to not be a victim of the stress. So far, his practice seems to be working.

“Relaxes you, you’re brought into a different mindset. Just kind of, you’re at peace and relaxation,” he said.
