RICHMOND, KY (WLEX/WCMH) — A petition on the website Change.org is pushing to get a residence hall at Eastern Kentucky University re-named after slain Cincinnati Zoo gorilla, Harambe.
The May 2016 death of the 17-year-old silverback gorilla has sparked countless internet memes and tributes.
Former University of Kentucky quarterback, Patrick Towles, is dedicating his upcoming football season at Boston College to the gorilla.
Harambe was shot by a zoo official on May 28, 2016, after a 3-year-old boy fell into his enclosure.
The petition reads:
This year we lost someone that meant a great deal to all of us. Remembering the gentle creature that had his life taken so soon, would make EKU look amazing. Renaming New Hall to Harambe Hall would be a great step forward for EKU and its lack of small plans.”
More than 1,000 supporters have signed the petition so far.
