Arson fire survivor Safyre Terry turns 9, thanks fire department for saving her life

SCHENECTADY, NY (NEWS10) – Schenectady’s Super Survivor turned nine and she celebrated it by thanking the people who saved her life.

Safyre Terry visited Schenectady Fire Department Station One on Friday to formally say “thank you” to the officers who rescued her from a deadly house fire. Safyre was badly burned in the 2013 arson on Hulett Street that killed her father and three of her siblings.

She’s been waiting to thank those responsible for saving her life, but Friday was the first time she’s been well enough to do it.

“Thank you for saving me from the fire, and I love you all,” she said.

Safyre’s wish for Christmas cards in 2015 went around the world.

Most recently, she met the band Def Leppard and drummer Rick Allen, who, like Safyre, is missing a hand.

Safyre was able to go backstage and meet the whole band before their concert at Darien Lake. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
