Friday Freebies: Music, football, skateboarding and obstacle courses

COLUMBUS  (WCMH) — It’s the end of the first full week back in school for most people and it’s one of the last summer weekends we’ll see this year! Make sure you get out there and make the most of it with these awesome — and FREE — activities. Whether you like football, ballet, blues, classical music, skateboarding or tackling muddy obstacle courses, there’s something for everyone:

VIVO Music Festival

Like classical music? Like beer? Are you headed to Gallery Hop anyway? Stop by the VIVO Music Festival and treat your ears to free concerts featuring the works of Beethoven on Friday night, chamber music on Saturday night and masterworks by the likes of Mozart, Dvorak and Ravel on Sunday night!


BalletMet at Rhythm on the River

Catch a free preview of BalletMet’s 2016 – 2017 season at Rhythm on the River Friday night! You’ll see excerpts from Romeo and Juliet, The Nutcracker and Twisted 2, a collaboration between BalletMet, Opera Columbus and the Columbus Symphony Orchestra.

Free Concert featuring McGuffey Lane

Feeling are you feeling a little bit country? Is she feeling  a little bit rock’n roll? Head over to the Columbus Commons and treat yourself to a free concert by McGuffey Lane! McGuffey Lane has played with some of the top names in music (The Allman Brothers, The Charlie Daniel’s Band, The Judds) and will be playing with local band Grassinine.



O-H! I-O! Buckeye football is finally here, so what else could you have planned for a Saturday? Grab some friends, head over to the stadium early and get your pre-game festivities on! There are plenty of groups that will be set up, and many of them are free!

Historic Dublin Street Bazaar

Hit the streets of Dublin and check out the open-air street market, featuring Historic District retailers and restaurants, local artists and food trucks!

HotLicks Bluesfest

Football not  your thing? Then head over to downtown Granville and check out Hotlicks Bluesfest! The lineup includes Guitar Club, Ray Fuller, Scott Ainslie, Mike Wheeler, Sean Carney with Joey Gilmore and Lil Ed and the Blues Imperials.

Mud & Madness

Want to get out and do something active with your kids this weekend? How does tackling obstacles on a 1.5-mile run sound? What if we added in a little mud? The Mud & Madness run at Blacklick Woods Nature Center is perfect for mud-loving children, adults and families who also love a challenge!

Late Skate Showcase Fall Jam

Get the most out of the last couple weekends of summer and show off your skills at the Alum Creek skate park! You’ll have the whole evening to enjoy the night under the lights on your board. All ages and abilities are welcome.



Have kids? Then head over to your neighborhood Chipotle on Sunday! The burrito joint is giving away free kids’ meals. Do you have a valid college ID? You can also get a free soft drink or iced tea if you buy a meal!

Free Shadowbox Live: a Tribute to Joe Crocker

We know you already love Shadowbox Live, and who doesn’t love the musical stylings of Joe Crocker? Come out to the Columbus Commons for a double Friday Freebie and see Shadowbox Live present a unique performance, A Tribute to Joe Crocker. You’ll get two hours of music from Crocker’s career, plus the bar will be open and food trucks will be on hand at 6pm.
